25 Years Without Justice: The Unsolved Murder of Tyrone Oliver

A split-screen tribute image features two photos of Tyrone Oliver. On the left, a young Tyrone is pictured smiling outdoors in a posed portrait. On the right, an older Tyrone lies shirtless on a bed, cradling a baby. A bold black banner with white and red text spans the bottom of the image, reading: “25 Years Without Justice: The Unsolved Murder of Tyrone Oliver.” The image is framed with a yellow border. This past weekend marked 25 years since Tyrone Oliver was murdered in the heart of Halifax’s North End.

On the night of July 20, 2000, police responded to reports of gunshots on the 2400 block of Creighton Street. There, at a local basketball court, they found 20-year-old Tyrone suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died later that night in hospital.

That same evening, police also responded to two stabbings and an assault in the same area – incidents believed to be connected to Tyrone’s murder. Despite the chaos and the number of people present, no one has ever been charged in connection with his death.

Now, 25 years later, his daughter Tiana, who was only 13 months old when Tyrone was killed, is publicly calling for justice. In a recent social media post, she wrote:

“This weekend marks 25 years since my father was MURDERED.
25 years without any justice.
25 years unsolved.
25 years without him.

There are people out there that know who killed my father and said nothing. Living, breathing, human beings that know and went along with their lives.

May this reach you.

Please find it in your heart to share.”

We are sharing.

Tyrone’s case remains active with Halifax Regional Police’s Special Investigation Section and is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program, which offers up to $150,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information is urged to contact:

  • Police investigators directly at 902-490-5020, or
  • The Rewards Program at 1-888-710-9090

Justice delayed does not have to be justice denied. For Tiana, for Tyrone, and for a community that remembers.
