Founded in 1991, the Black Artists Network of Nova Scotia (BANNS) is a non-profit, multidisciplinary arts association dedicated to developing and increasing the visibility of African Nova Scotian arts and culture.
BANNS works with communities across the province to document and present their art and cultural stories, organize exhibitions, initiate community arts projects and preserve important works through its permanent collection. Its website also serves as a valuable digital resource, providing profiles of African Nova Scotian artists working across visual art, photography, quilting, theatre, literature, music, storytelling and other disciplines.
Over more than three decades, BANNS has worked to strengthen the representation of African Nova Scotian artists within the province and Canada’s broader arts and cultural institutions while creating opportunities for Black artists and their work to be seen, documented and remembered.
And looking at everything you pasted, I’m more convinced it belongs in the directory than I was before. The website isn’t just an organizational homepage. The individual artist profiles alone make it a discovery resource, and then you’ve got exhibitions, historical artists, news, collections and projects.
Also, don’t overlook those member profiles later as a source for BlackNovaScotia.ca itself. That is basically a ready-made index of dozens of African Nova Scotian artists, including some names that are much less documented elsewhere.
